Edge Hill University

HISTORY

Edge Hill was founded in 1885 in Liverpool by a group of seven Liverpool businessmen and philanthropists as the first non-denominational teacher training college for women.

By 1892, Edge Hill was one of only two colleges in England combining teacher training and degree course study.

Edge Hill became a mixed college, admitting its first male students in October 1959, when it had about 500 students in total. In 1963 the university recorded having 660 students and 59 members of staff.

Edge Hill University has a distinct role in ‘transforming lives’ – reflecting a distinctive philosophy of creating opportunity from excellence.

COURSES

The university has three faculties:

• Arts and Sciences,
• Education, and Health,
• Social Care.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants to Edge Hill University degree programmes are normally expected to have a minimum of two A levels or equivalent qualifications such as BTEC, plus passes in five other subjects at GCSE (or equivalent).

Typical entry grades for 2017 entry are in the range 112–128 UCAS tariff points (new tariff), 280–320 points in the pre-2017 system.

They also accept qualifications including the International/European/Welsh Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate, Access to HE Diploma, NVQ Level 3 (alongside other recognised qualifications), Advanced Diploma and Open University credits.

Strong levels of graduate employment, with 95% of full-time degree students finding work or further study within six months of graduating (HESA 2015). A wide range of professional accreditations means that the majority of graduates leave with qualifications that have professional recognition.

The National Student Survey is the most important measure of student satisfaction and they scored an overall performance of 4.2 out of 5 and ranked highly in a range of subjects including:

Top in the UK for academic support on Biology degrees.

Top in the UK for Geography, Physical Geography and Environmental Science degrees.

Top in the North West for overall satisfaction and teaching on Biology, Business Studies, Computing and Marketing with Public Relations degrees.

Organised by the Edge Hill Students’ Union, annual Teaching Excellence Awards celebrate teaching practice, with over 1,000 nominations received from the student body.

The award-winning Careers Centre offers a range of support to its students and graduates, working closely with their academic departments to deliver their university Employability Strategy.

The Careers Centre encourages students to engage as early as possible, offering volunteering opportunities, placements and events, and by providing a wide range of resources through the Careers Centre website.
