Applying for University

So you’ve decided that you want to go to university? Congratulations!

You still have doubts about where to go and which subject best suits your career goals? Study Britannia will assist you with this decision process too. However, to complete your application, we need some information from you:

Application Form Checklist:

  • Copy of your passport
  • Copy of your Visa (if you live outside of the EU)
  • Transcript of your grades
  • Graduation certificate (Compulsory for most, but not all courses)
  • Certificate of English proficiency, e.g. IELTS or TOEFL (Not compulsory, although you may not be able to apply to certain courses, or may need to take an additional foundation year in your study if you do not have one)
  • Personal statement
  • Reference letter or reference name and contact information
  • CV

If you are applying for a postgraduate degree, we will require a copy of your bachelor’s degree. Similarly, those applying for a PhD must provide sufficient evidence of their Master’s degree, as well as their research proposal.

Documents in Detail:

Once we have received these details, we can set out trying to find the right university for you. If you are unsure of how to retrieve some of these documents or you don’t know what some of them are, check out the detailed list below.

Your personal statement is your opportunity to “sell” yourself and show off your passion for and understanding of your chosen area of study. It is usually 400-600 words or around a typed side of A4 paper sheet, where you deepen the description of the experience specified in your CV and explain how and why you are a good candidate for that specific course and that specific university. Students may include why they want to go to university, what they aspire to achieve with their degree of choice, and any personal skills or achievements that may be relevant for the application’s purpose.

To read more about what to include in your personal statement, check out our personal statement guide on our Brochure.

A CV or Curriculum Vitae is a short (no more than two pages) account of a person’s career history and qualifications. Whilst usually written for job applications, CVs are also required to register for university.

CV Checklist:

  • Education Qualifications
  • Job history (particularly highlighting jobs relevant to your course of study)
  • Contact Information
  • Extra-Curricular interests
  • Skills and Strengths

A well-written CV is a crucial tool to establish yourself in an increasingly competitive job market, and it needs to focus on the right skills to make you stand out from the crowd. Study Britannia offers a Career Profile and Application Service, where we can help and advise you to write and edit your CV and personal statement.

A reference letter is a document authored by someone other than yourself; somebody who knows you or has known you within an academic or professional environment. This could be an old teacher or lecturer, a current one or a superior at your work. The letter should include information on how you operate as a worker or student, covering aspects such as how you interact with others, your performance and the effort you put into work. It must also explain the relationship between you and the referee, as well as state that they believe you will be able to complete the course to a satisfactory standard.

It is important that the letter comes from the appropriate person; it cannot be written by a friend or colleague who operated at the same job level as you. It must also be printed on official company/school/university paper, with letterhead, and be signed at the bottom.
